Hilton Cancun With Kids: An Honest Review for Families & Multigenerational Groups

If you're considering Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort for a family vacation, multigenerational trip or even a relaxing couples getaway, there is a lot to love about this resort.

After staying here with my own family, one of the biggest surprises was just how easy this resort is. And the service was excellent!

Hilton Cancun is a large resort with hundreds of rooms, but it doesn't feel like one of those massive Mexican all-inclusives where you're walking 15 minutes from your room to breakfast. Guest rooms are in one main multi-story building, while the restaurants, lobby, bars, pools and amenities are conveniently located on the main level.

For families, that's fantastic.

For multigenerational groups? Even better.

Grandma and Grandpa can relax around the quieter pool while the kids are at the waterpark, and nobody needs a shuttle or a small expedition to meet back up for lunch.

There are, however, a few things you should know before booking Hilton Cancun—especially about the beach, location, pools and transportation.

Here's what our family actually thought.

Quick Hilton Cancun Review

Best for: Families, multigenerational groups, mature couples and travelers looking for an upscale but relaxed all-inclusive.

Atmosphere: Classy, modern and family-friendly without feeling like a giant kids resort.

Party level: Low. This is definitely not a Cancun party resort.

Biggest strengths: Excellent rooms, fantastic service, easy-to-navigate layout (5 minutes to walk anywhere!), lots of food choices, separate lively and quiet pool areas, an excellent Kids Club and a great setup for families travelling with grandparents.

Biggest weakness: The beach. If your number-one priority is a wide white-sand beach with rows of loungers and brilliant turquoise Cancun water, I would choose a different resort.

One thing parents should know: The children's waterpark is fun, particularly for younger kids, but the water was a bit cold during our stay and there aren't any big waterslides.

Hilton Cancun Resort Layout: One of Its Biggest Advantages

One of my favorite things about Hilton Cancun is something that's surprisingly difficult to appreciate until you're actually there: the layout is incredibly convenient.

This isn't a huge sprawling resort made up of dozens of separate buildings.

Instead, picture one large building shaped somewhat like a W.

The rooms are located on the upper levels, while the lobby, restaurants, bars, pools and most amenities are downstairs.

That W-shaped design also does something very clever—it naturally separates the livelier family areas from the quieter areas of the resort.

The Family and Activity Side

On one side you'll find the kids' pool and water playground, with the main activity pool just below it. This pool is an infinity pool, and has a shallow ledge around it with loungers. This shallow area is also a great place for the little ones to hang out in.

This is the fun family hangout area, with music, games and entertainment throughout the day. The Kids Club is nearby, along with several convenient places to grab food.

I was super impressed with the quick service and friendly staff. Relaxing on the lounger or chilling in the pool, we would barely finish a drink when the staff would be coming with another. And, they were always plentiful and easy to get. Always warm, friendly, and eager to help, the service was really top notch not just at the pool, but throughout the resort.

La Churrería—aka the very dangerous place where you can continually acquire churros, ice cream and sweets—is on this side as well.

You'll also find casual poolside food nearby, including some seriously good burgers and, at times during our stay, a taco cart.

The Mexican restaurant's patio overlooks the pool area, while Sunan, the Asian/Southeast Asian-inspired restaurant, sits closer to the ocean and offers better water views.

The Quieter Side

Walk around the middle portion of the building and the atmosphere changes.

There's another pool near the buffet that feels considerably quieter and more relaxed, with its own bar. There are also Jacuzzi's here as well.

During our stay, this area tended to attract adults looking for a peaceful pool day rather than families wanting to be in the middle of the action.

This is one of the reasons I think Hilton Cancun is particularly good for multigenerational groups.

Everyone doesn't have to want the same vacation.

The kids and parents can spend the afternoon around the waterpark and activity pool while grandparents—or anyone wanting a quieter afternoon—can relax around the other pool.

You're separated enough that the atmosphere feels completely different, yet you're only a short walk apart.

What Are the Rooms Like at Hilton Cancun?

The rooms were one of my favorite things about Hilton Cancun.

They are beautiful and all have balconies. Also - there is 24 hour room service! Although, take note, that our room service order (for an unwell kid) took about an hour to arrive. The food was warm and delicious once it did arrive though.

And perhaps even more importantly when you're travelling with kids: they're spacious.

Our family had connecting rooms, with a king room for my husband and me and a two-queen room for the kids.

It felt downright luxurious.

Instead of six people, six suitcases and everyone's assorted vacation junk being crammed into one space, we could spread everything between two rooms.

The kids had two queen beds, their own bathroom, TV and balcony. We had a king bed, our own bathroom, TV, balcony and a lounger beside the bed.

We simply kept the connecting door open between the rooms. There was even a mechanism—I'm pretty sure magnets were involved—that conveniently held the door open.

It basically gave us one huge family space while still allowing everyone some privacy.

The Bathrooms Are Spacious & Bright

The bathrooms deserve their own mention.

Our shower was tiled and spacious. Both the shower and toilet areas had frosted-glass doors.

The rest of the bathroom incorporated clear glass into the design, so you could actually look from the bathroom, through the bedroom and straight out the balcony.

It gives the entire room a bright, open feeling.

The frosted glass around the shower and toilet does provide privacy, but travelers who strongly prefer completely enclosed traditional bathrooms should be aware of the more open-concept design.

And now for perhaps the most important bathroom information you'll find in this review:

Bring your own conditioner if you're picky about conditioner.

I have long, fine, straight hair and decided to try the resort conditioner even though I normally travel with my own.

Nope.

It did absolutely nothing to detangle my hair.

This is admittedly an extremely minor complaint. 😂

The Beds Were Incredibly Comfortable

I slept like a baby here.

Our king bed was extremely comfortable, the room stayed quiet, and the climate control worked very well.

The air conditioning is tied to the doors, so everything needs to be closed for the system to run properly. Our room never felt humid or musty—which can sometimes be an issue at tropical resorts.

Between the comfortable bed, good climate control and quiet room, I slept wonderfully for our entire stay.

Don't Automatically Dismiss a Garden-View Room

Every room has a balcony, and I wouldn't immediately assume you need to upgrade to an ocean view.

We had what was classified as a garden-view room, which actually overlooked the mangroves behind the hotel.

It was incredibly serene.

I'd sit outside in the morning with a cup of coffee from the pod coffee maker in our room and listen to almost complete silence while watching colorful birds in the mangroves.

It had its own kind of tropical beauty and was unbelievably peaceful.

If saving money by booking the garden-view category allows you to spend more elsewhere on your vacation, I wouldn't be afraid of this room category at all.

Our minibar was continually restocked with bottled water, pop, juice and beer, and there was plenty of closet and storage space.

I also had to work a few times during our vacation—because apparently other people still expect me to book their vacations while I'm on mine!—and the table and chairs gave me plenty of room to set up my laptop.

Hilton Cancun Pools and Waterpark: What Families Should Know

There are some important things parents should know about the pools before booking.

The Kids' Pool and Waterpark

Many kids were still happily playing in the waterpark/splash park and pool, but the water was quite cool.

My kids still loved it, but they'd play for a while and then eventually need to get out and warm themselves up before heading back in.

There also aren't any huge waterslides here.

The water playground has smaller slides and splash features, so I'd describe it as much better suited to younger children than older kids looking for a big waterpark experience.

If your 12-year-old is picturing enormous twisting waterslides, this isn't that kind of resort.

The Activity Pool Was Much Warmer

Thankfully, the large infinity-style activity pool below the children's pool was considerably warmer.

This was the livelier pool during our stay, with music, games and organized entertainment throughout the day.

Our kids could easily move between the waterpark and the warmer activity pool when they'd had enough of the cold water.

There are also a couple of Jacuzzis around the pool area.

I wouldn't call them hot tubs because they weren't particularly hot, but they were pleasantly warm.

Our kids appreciated them enormously when they needed to defrost after the waterpark!

What Is the Beach Really Like at Hilton Cancun?

This is probably the section I'd most want someone to read before booking Hilton Cancun.

If you're picturing the classic Cancun beach—wide white sand, rows of loungers and incredibly bright turquoise Caribbean water—this beach is different.

That doesn't necessarily make it bad. You just need to know what you're booking.

The Beach Setup Is Unusual

The resort is almost arranged in levels as you move toward the ocean:

Kids' pool/waterpark → activity/infinity pool → lounge and deck area → beach

The loungers are up above the actual beach, rather than lined up directly along the shoreline.

There are a couple of spots with some sand and loungers off the deck, but the actual beach below is fairly narrow. There's also a bit of a sandy cliff/drop-off between the upper deck area and the beach.

During our stay, people seemed to use the beach more for walking, playing in the sand, kicking a soccer ball around—the resort had soccer nets—and enjoying water activities when the waves allowed.

If you're primarily a pool family, this setup may not bother you at all.

If your idea of a perfect vacation is spending every day in a lounger directly on the beach, I'd take this into consideration.

Why Does the Water at Hilton Cancun Look Murky?

The resort is located close to a mangrove area, and during our stay there was plenty of natural mangrove material in the water—think small woody pieces of roots and other organic debris.

Especially closer to shore, the water can have a darker appearance. However, on the bright sunny days, the turquoise colors of the ocean were still magnificent!

So, is Hilton Cancun a resort I'd choose specifically for an incredible beach? Probably not.

But if you care more about pools, rooms, food, service and family amenities—and simply want access to the ocean for walks, sand play and occasional water activities—the beach may be perfectly fine for you.

The Kids Club Was a HUGE Hit With Our Kids

Of all the family amenities at Hilton Cancun, the Kids Club was probably the biggest hit with our children.

They loved it.

And I mean constantly asking when they could go back loved it.

Hilton's Kids Club is designed for children ages 4–12, and there were games, movies, crafts and organized activities throughout our stay.

Our kids came back to the room with Christmas ornaments they'd made and T-shirts they'd decorated.

There were movie nights, crafts, games and different activities depending on the day.

Instead of us trying to convince them to go to Kids Club so Mom and Dad could have a break, we had the opposite problem.

Important Tip for Your First Kids Club Visit

Bring your passports/ID with you the first time you register your children.

During our stay, staff needed information from our identification when we initially registered the kids.

After that first registration, the process was much easier and we could simply sign them in and out.

That's the kind of thing that's nice to know before you've walked all the way downstairs without your passport!

What Are the Hilton Cancun Kids Club Hours?

The Kids Club did not operate continuously all day during our stay.

Instead, it opened in blocks: for a couple of hours in the morning, again during the afternoon and then after supper, with closures around lunch and dinner.

Schedules and activities can change, so I would check the current Kids Club schedule when you arrive rather than planning your vacation around specific published times.

This is particularly important if you're hoping to book a couples massage or adults-only dinner while your children are at the club.

Food at Hilton Cancun: Better Than I Expected

Food can be pretty hit-or-miss at all-inclusive resorts.

We ate extremely well at Hilton Cancun.

And because of the resort's compact layout, food was always easy to get to.

Vela Buffet: Genuinely Good

I wouldn't treat the buffet as the restaurant you settle for when you can't get anywhere else.

We really enjoyed it.

Breakfast had tons of variety, including both Western and Mexican options.

There was even a smoothie station where you could choose your own fruits and ingredients and have someone blend a custom smoothie for you.

I personally love chilaquiles, so my breakfast usually involved chilaquiles, sausage, fruit and whatever else happened to catch my attention that morning.

For children, there was a dedicated kid-friendly area.

At dinner, this included familiar foods such as chicken nuggets and quesadillas—which is very handy if you've got one child who takes a look at the enchiladas you've been raving about and responds with, “Do they have chicken nuggets?”

Meanwhile, adults could choose from plenty of international and Mexican options, including things like enchiladas.

There was always a lot of variety.

The servers were also excellent. Someone was usually there quickly to take our drink order and help with anything we needed.

24-Hour Lobby Café: Coffee, Snacks and Treats Anytime

Another feature I really appreciated was the 24-hour café in the lobby. It was incredibly convenient to take the elevator downstairs and grab something within a couple of minutes.

The café had specialty coffees, snacks, sandwiches, and treats such as fancy cheesecakes etc., but there was also a self-serve station nearby with cookies, baked goods and other goodies you could help yourself to.

There were also self-serve machines for coffee and hot chocolate, plus hot water and a selection of teas.

My one extremely minor complaint? They could use a few more herbal tea choices! During our stay, I mostly found chamomile and fruit-flavored herbal teas, neither of which are my favorite.

There's me being difficult again. 😂

But seriously, having somewhere open 24 hours where you can grab a coffee, hot chocolate, snack or treat without waiting for a restaurant to open was a fantastic little perk—especially when travelling with kids.

La Luce Italian Restaurant

We really enjoyed the Italian restaurant.

The portions were fairly small, so don't expect one giant North American-sized plate to arrive and feed you for the evening.

But honestly, that added to the fun.

We ordered several different plates and shared and sampled more dishes than we probably would have otherwise.

Everything we tried was very good.

Sunan: Asian-Inspired Rather Than Strictly Traditional

We also enjoyed Sunan, although I'd describe the food as more Asian fusion/Southeast Asian-inspired than strictly traditional.

Some dishes tasted more authentic to what I was familiar with than others.

Everything still had lots of flavor, but some of the sauces weren't quite what I expected based on the same dishes I've eaten at Asian restaurants at home.

That's not necessarily a criticism—just something to know.

Maxal Mexican Restaurant

The Mexican restaurant was another winner for us.

The food was great, and its patio overlooking the pool area makes it a nice place to eat outside and still feel part of everything happening around the resort.

Poolside Burgers

And those burgers from the poolside cart?

Big and delicious.

Sometimes that's exactly what you want after spending half the day swimming.

There was also a little Cevicheria set up for lunch in front of Sunan!

Auma Steakhouse

Unfortunately, we never made it to the steakhouse. But, I've seen plenty of reviews that rave about it. So, make your reservations for Auma as soon as you land!

The Lobby Bar: Classy and Relaxed

In the evening, the lobby transforms into a classy, relaxed gathering spot, with music, cocktails and sometimes live musicians or other entertainment.

The Azulinda Lobby Bar is open until 1 a.m., so there's still somewhere to enjoy a late-night drink without needing a nightclub.

It really fits the overall vibe of Hilton Cancun: lively enough to be fun, but relaxed and definitely not a party scene.

Don't Eat Dinner Before Mexican Night!

I wish someone had told me this.

One evening we ate a full dinner at the buffet and then wandered toward the evening entertainment.

Big mistake.

Not because the buffet wasn't good—it was excellent.

But because we discovered Mexican Night afterward.

The evening entertainment area is down the hall from the main lobby in the direction of the neighboring Waldorf Astoria. There are several meeting and ballroom spaces in this area, and this is where the Mexican Night dancers performed during our stay.

Outside the ballroom, the hallway had been transformed.

Both sides were lined with food carts and stations.

It almost felt like walking through a little Mexican street-food market.

There were tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, churros, drinks and all sorts of other food.

And we had just eaten dinner.

I was devastated. 😂

So here's my advice:

Check the evening schedule before deciding where to eat.

If Mexican Night is happening, go hungry.

Evening Entertainment: Surprisingly Fun and Very Family-Friendly

The evening entertainment was another thing I really liked about Hilton Cancun.

This isn't a resort where every night revolves around a giant outdoor stage blasting music until midnight.

Most of what we experienced was fairly low-key, tasteful and family-friendly.

Some evenings had musicians or entertainment closer to the lobby and lobby bar, while larger scheduled activities took place down the hall in the ballroom/meeting-room area.

There's also an outdoor entertainment venue/amphitheater behind the Kids Club.

Hilton advertises its open-air amphitheater for entertainment, although there weren't any performances there during our particular stay.

Entertainment locations and schedules can change from night to night and season to season. There is usually an entertainment board outside the buffet that tells you what's going on that evening.

Mexican Night

Mexican Night was probably the most elaborate evening we saw, with traditional-style dancers performing inside and all of those fantastic food stations lining the hallway outside.

It felt like an event rather than simply another resort show.

Silent Disco

Another evening featured a silent disco.

Everyone gets headphones, so you can dance to the music while anyone without headphones gets to watch a room full of people dancing around to apparent silence.

Which is entertaining in itself.

Game Night

But one of the funniest nights was game night.

It involved guests from the audience and was absolutely hilarious.

These are the kinds of resort activities I enjoy because families can participate together instead of parents feeling like they need to put the kids to bed before the “adult” entertainment starts.

Throughout our stay, the entertainment we saw was tasteful and appropriate for a broad range of ages.

There is no nightclub on site, and Hilton Cancun definitely isn't what I'd consider a party resort.

That is actually one of the reasons I think it works so well for families, multigenerational groups and mature couples.

Hilton Cancun Location and Transportation: Close to the Airport, But Secluded

One of Hilton Cancun's biggest location advantages is its proximity to Cancun International Airport. It's a relatively short transfer (about 20 minutes) compared with resorts farther south in the Riviera Maya, which is especially nice after a long flight with kids.

But once you arrive, you should know that Hilton Cancun is quite secluded.

The resort sits well back from the highway behind a security gate and mangrove area. You aren't going to walk out of the resort and find shops, restaurants or nightlife around the corner.

Personally, I think that isolation is both a pro and a con.

The Upside: It Feels Private

One thing I really appreciated was the lack of vendors walking up and down the beach trying to sell things.

The setting felt peaceful and private, and that fits really well with the overall upscale atmosphere of the resort.

If your plan is to spend most of your vacation enjoying the resort, the secluded location isn't necessarily a drawback at all.

Can You Use Uber at Hilton Cancun?

During our stay, I was able to take an Uber to Hilton Cancun when we were coming from Cancun.

Getting an Uber from Hilton Cancun was a different story.

Because the resort is located behind a security gate, we couldn't simply request a rideshare to come pick us up. Instead, we needed to ask the concierge to arrange a taxi.

There were usually taxis nearby, so getting one wasn't difficult. It just meant we didn't have the freedom to pull out our phones and order an Uber whenever we wanted to leave.

Transportation policies can change, so I'd still verify the current rideshare situation with the resort when you arrive.

Hilton Cancun Also Offers a Shuttle to the Hotel Zone

Hilton currently advertises a daily shuttle between the resort and Cancun's Hotel Zone.

That makes the secluded location considerably less limiting if you'd like to spend part of a day exploring Cancun, shopping or simply seeing more than the resort.

Because shuttle schedules, stops, capacity and reservation requirements can change, I wouldn't build an entire day's plans around it without confirming the details first.

Ask the concierge when you arrive for the current Hotel Zone shuttle schedule and whether you need to reserve your seats in advance.

For families and multigenerational groups, this is a particularly nice option because you can enjoy the quiet, secluded resort setting while still having a relatively easy way to get into the busier part of Cancun without arranging separate transportation every time.

Is Hilton Cancun's Location Right for You?

I'd consider the location a pro if you want:

• A peaceful, secluded resort
• A relatively short airport transfer
• No constant stream of beach vendors
• To spend most of your vacation at the resort
• Occasional trips into Cancun rather than going out every day

I'd consider it a con if you want to walk off the property every evening for restaurants, shopping and nightlife.

This is much more of a “stay and enjoy the resort” location than a “walk out the front door and explore Cancun” location.

Is Hilton Cancun Good for Multigenerational Families?

I think multigenerational groups are actually one of the best fits for Hilton Cancun.

The layout solves a problem that comes up constantly when grandparents, parents and kids travel together:

Not everyone wants to do the same thing all day.

Grandparents can spend the afternoon around the quieter pool.

Parents can take younger children to the waterpark.

The whole family can hang around the warmer activity pool.

Kids ages 4–12 can disappear happily into Kids Club for crafts and games.

Teenagers have their own hangout space.

And everyone can easily meet back up for lunch or dinner without navigating a gigantic property.

That's the real advantage.

You can travel together without spending every waking minute together.

For multigenerational travel, that's sometimes the secret to everyone still liking each other by the flight home.

Hilton Cancun FAQ

Is Hilton Cancun Good for Families?

Yes. Hilton Cancun works particularly well for families who want a Kids Club, water playground, family activities and kid-friendly food options without staying at a resort that feels completely centered around children.

The compact layout is another major advantage. Rooms, restaurants, pools and most amenities are close together, which makes life much easier when travelling with kids.

Is Hilton Cancun Good for Teenagers?

It depends on your teenager.

There is a Teen Zone and plenty to do around the resort, but this isn't a huge waterpark resort. The children's water area has smaller slides rather than giant waterslides.

Teens who are happy with pools, activities, food and a more relaxed vacation may enjoy it. Those specifically looking for enormous waterslides and non-stop action may prefer another resort.

Does Hilton Cancun Have a Good Beach?

Hilton Cancun has direct beach access, but I wouldn't choose this resort primarily for its beach.

The beach is fairly narrow, loungers are located above the shoreline mostly on the decks, and the water can appear darker or murkier because of the nearby mangrove environment.

For pool-focused families who still want access to the ocean, it may be perfectly adequate. Serious beach lovers may prefer another Cancun resort.

Is Hilton Cancun a Party Resort?

No. Hilton Cancun had a much more relaxed, upscale atmosphere during our stay.

There were family-friendly shows, live entertainment, Mexican Night, a silent disco and other activities, but no on-site nightclub. However, the lobby bar is open and a great place to mingle until 1 am. I think that balance is one reason the resort works well for families, multigenerational groups and mature couples.

How Far Is Hilton Cancun From Cancun Airport?

Hilton Cancun is located around 20 minutes from Cancun International Airport, making the transfer much shorter than travelling to many resorts farther south in the Riviera Maya.

Traffic and transfer times can vary but 20 minutes is normal.

Final Thoughts: Would We Stay at Hilton Cancun Again?

Absolutely! Hilton Cancun isn't perfect for everyone, but it was a great fit for our family.

I'd recommend Hilton Cancun for:

• 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families who want a great Kids Club and family amenities without a resort that feels completely kid-focused
• 👵 Multigenerational groups who will appreciate having lively and quiet areas
• 💑 Mature couples looking for a classy, relaxed all-inclusive without a party atmosphere
• 🏨 Anyone who prefers a compact, easy-to-navigate resort over a huge sprawling property
• 🍽️ Travelers who value good food, comfortable rooms and excellent service

I might choose somewhere else if:

• 🏖️ A gorgeous turquoise beach is your #1 priority
• 🛝 Your older kids want huge waterslides and a major waterpark
• 🎉 You're looking for nightlife and a party resort
• 🚶 You want to walk off the resort to restaurants, shopping and entertainment

Would we go back? Yes. Between the spacious connecting rooms, fantastic service, food, Kids Club and incredibly easy layout, Hilton Cancun checked a lot of boxes for us.

And I wouldn't hesitate to book that peaceful mangrove-view room again—morning coffee on that balcony was pretty hard to beat.
